Cellist Santiago Cañón-Valencia Makes His Carnegie Hall Debut

Tuesday, November 10 at Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall, 881 Seventh Avenue, with the start time on Carnegie's calendar.

Carnegie Hall is welcoming a cellist with a story that spans continents. Colombian cellist Santiago Cañón-Valencia, born in Bogotá in 1995, makes his Carnegie Hall debut on Tuesday, November 10 at Weill Recital Hall, joined by pianist Victor Santiago Asunción. The recital is part of a five-city North American tour.

A musician with a wide reach

He made his orchestral debut as a soloist with the Orquesta Filarmónica de Bogotá at the age of six. His training includes work with teachers in Colombia, New Zealand and the United States, and at the Kronberg Academy in Germany. He took a silver medal and the audience favorite prize at the Tchaikovsky Competition in 2019, and third prize at the Queen Elisabeth Competition in 2017. In 2022 he was named a BBC New Generation Artist, which led to a debut at London's Wigmore Hall.

What to expect

The program listing names works by Debussy, Ginastera, Shostakovich and Pärt, along with a piece by Cañón-Valencia himself. Weill Recital Hall is a smaller room on the Carnegie campus, so the evening suits listeners who like to hear the detail of a cello and piano duo up close. Recent seasons have also brought him to Tanglewood, where he gave a recital presented by the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
