Sonya Yoncheva Stars in Cherubini's Medea at the Met Opera

Wednesday, November 4 at 7:30 PM at the Metropolitan Opera House, Lincoln Center, with performances through November 21.

The Metropolitan Opera is in the middle of a run of Luigi Cherubini's Medea, one of the more dramatic productions on its fall calendar. Composed in 1797 and drawn from Euripides' ancient tragedy, the opera follows a sorceress who has given up her homeland for Giasone, a man who now turns to another bride. Cherubini's score is intense and theatrical, and it rewards a listener who comes ready for a powerful evening. The run opened on October 30 and continues through November 21.

The production

The staging is by David McVicar, the Scottish director known for theatrical productions across the opera world. Sonya Yoncheva sings the title role, and Michael Spyres sings Giasone. Early critical response has been warm. The reviews collected by Broadway's Scorecard describe the production in very positive terms, with the bulk of them rating it highly.

The running time is about two hours with one intermission, which makes it a manageable evening even on a weeknight.
